A different vantage point

Experience from the other side of the case

Regina serves as court-appointed counsel for proposed conservatees in the Los Angeles and Orange County Superior Courts. In that role she represents the person the case is about: she meets with them, reads the investigator's and regional center's reports, and tells the judge what that person wants.

When she represents a family filing a petition, she brings that perspective with her. She knows the questions appointed counsel and court investigators will ask, and she prepares petitions that answer them before the hearing.

Where families start

What clients often tell us on the first call

A family holding hands at the beach, facing the ocean

"My son turns 18 soon and has a developmental disability."

At 18, parents lose legal authority to make medical, school, and financial decisions. We review alternatives such as supported decision-making and, where needed, petition for a limited conservatorship before the birthday arrives.

"Mom has dementia and someone is taking advantage of her."

A conservatorship of the person and estate can secure her care and her finances. When the situation is urgent, the court can appoint a temporary conservator.

"Dad passed away and I'm named executor."

We determine whether the estate needs full probate or qualifies for a simpler procedure, then guide you through notice, creditor claims, the inventory, and final distribution.

"Our daughter will inherit money, but she receives SSI and Medi-Cal."

A properly drafted special needs trust can hold the inheritance or a settlement for her benefit without disqualifying her from benefits.
